THIRTY years on and Howgill continues to support local families in need.

Alongside the celebrations marking the anniversary of the center, were the continuing donations of Christmas gifts and hampers to around 70 families.

The Charlie and Kathleen Dunnery Children's Fund gave toys worth £ 500, alongside donations from Tesco and volunteer bag-packing at Morisons also raised £ 836.

This year it is estimated that vulnerable families in Copeland spent just an extra £ 56 on gifts and food during the festive season. In the run up to Christmas Day, these families received hampers filled with donated presents and food.

Over the years, Howgill has supported thousands of families through a variety of play schemes, workshops, one-to-one sessions and group events. Guests included former coordinators, toy library workers, play workers and artists as well as volunteers and people who have served on its management committee.

The anniversary event, held at Howgill's Family Centre at Cleator Moor, was attended by the mayor, Anne Faichney, Howgill's honorary president, Nico Craven, and chairman Willy Slavin.

Nico said: "It was a lovely occasion. It brought so many memories rolling back."

An aerobics demonstration was also given by Howgill therapeutic worker, Kay McMahon, and members of her Active Art of Relaxation class.

These sessions offer mums a chance to keep-fit, relax and take part in creative art-work, while their youngsters are cared for by a Howgill-organized creche.
